As I have been talking to and interviewing more dancers, I thought I should collect the words of wisdom I have acquired in one place as well as share other quotes that inspire me.

Any words of advice or inspiration for other dancers and choreographers?

Be authentic.  Be generous.  Be adventurous and above all curious.  Believe in longevity and perseverance.  Experience other art forms and let them inspire you.  Don’t kid yourself – dance is a grueling profession.  Be prepared for the hard work and always be learning. ~Regina Klenjoski, Regina Klenjoski Dance Company

Trust your gut! ~Kitty McNamee, Hysterica Dance Company

I encourage people to create honest work and be true to yourself when creating. There is room for everyone is this world so be you, and be free. ~Daniel Marshall, La Diego Dance Company

Love what you do.  Don’t be afraid to fight for it.  Turn things inside-out and upside-down and have a look at them.  Things happen in their own time, but you can make sure you’re ready to pounce when they do.  Let people help – they want to.  We all work damn hard to do what we do, so remember to enjoy the big and the little moments.  Love what you do.  Love what you do.  Love what you do. ~Laura Karlin, Invertigo Dance

As an artist, I am always looking to grow, and it feels weird, at times, giving advice when I am always looking for some. But, I can share the one major thing I have learned since starting my company. Be yourself. Every time I have compromised my vision, my instincts, my natural voice, my final work product has suffered, felt contrived, and been ultimately unsuccessful. The times that I have thrown all caution to the wind and delivered something that I feel is very “me”, it has been received amazingly. I think trusting myself and knowing that what I do is different than what other people are doing is a strength that I can’t afford to forget. ~Nate Hodges, RhetOracle Dance

Follow your heart, and keep persevering! I think you really have to love what you do. Dance can be a brutally demanding profession, but if you have the passion, strength and resilience, it can be a deeply rewarding one. For dancers hoping to become professional, I think it is very important to take class with a wide variety of teachers and choreographers, and also to try to get out and see as much dance and different types of dance companies as possible.  ~Sophie Monat, Monat Dance

Trust in your heart and where it leads you.  Don’t abandon your dreams of dancing if you truly feel it is in your soul to do it. Don’t let anyone convince you that dance is not a worthy endeavor or that it can only be a hobby.  Don’t worry about the financial aspect, things have a way of working themselves out.  See dance, lots of it, as well as visual art, music, film, literature.  Let life inform your art and let your art be a vital part of your life.  Find your own path in dance and trust in your instincts.  Praise and notoriety are not as important as your own artistic journey and growth, and don’t let them be the measure of your worth as an artist. ~Donna Sternberg, Donna Sternberg and Dancers

While I dance I can not judge, I can not hate, I can not separate myself from life. I can only be joyful and whole. This is why I dance. ~Hans Bos

Let the beauty of what you love be what you do. There are a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the earth. ~Rumi

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. ~Eleanor Roosevelt

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. ~Anais Nin

To watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak. ~Hopi Indian Saying

Dance is an art, paint your dream and follow it. ~Steven Thompson

To touch, to move, to inspire. This is the true gift of dance. ~Aubrey Lynch

“If you hear a different drummer — dreamer, take a chance . . . The road you choose to travel means the difference in the dance.” ~D. Morgan

I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human. ~Oriah Mountain Dreamer

To dance is to be yourself. Larger, more beautiful, more powerful. This is power on earth and it is yours for the taking. ~Agnes DeMille

We should consider everyday lost in which we don’t dance. ~Neitzsche

We ought to dance with rapture that we might be alive…and part of the living, incarnate cosmos. ~D. H. Lawrence

Dance is the only art in which we ourselves are the stuff of which it is made. ~Ted Shawn

It seems far more sensible to choose a life of love and joy, a life of authenticity and compassion, a life of laughter, tears, and the opportunity to truly be present and known to others, than to the barren pursuit of work which offers no wealth outside of money. ~Unknown

We’re fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance. ~Japanese Proverb

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined. ~Henry David Thoreau
