Tell us briefly about your dance company and its underlying philosophy.

The L.A. Contemporary Dance Company (LACDC) is a non-profit, repertory dance company based in downtown Los Angeles that performs a diverse repertoire of modern, ballet, and jazz influenced works representative of L.A.’s vibrant culture. LACDC sees itself as the stomping ground for the next generation of dance artists and collaborators to craft the future of dance in L.A. and beyond.

What piece will you be performing at Celebrate Dance 2012?

LACDC will be presenting “nana” choreographed by company member Genevieve Carson.  This work premiered in May 2011 as part of our repertory concert The Nature of Things

What do you hope to evoke in the audience with your piece?

This piece examines the varying dynamics of relationships in a person’s life, and how these relationships ultimately shape who we become.  When these relationships become memories, our memories become our identity.  What becomes of us when we can no longer remember?

My hope is that the audience can connect to the piece in some way that ignites reflection, reaction, or inspiration.

Any words of advice or inspiration for other dancers and choreographers?

Put yourself out there. Be available to feedback and change.  Adapt. Get organized.  Believe in your vision.  Persevere.
